Infrared thermometer (IR Thermometer) sends an Infrared ray to the surface of measurement and sends feedback to the instruments and thus conveys the temperature.

The Infrared thermometer is the best and only means to measure temperature from a distance and without touching the surface. It has a laser beam in red colour to assist the user to point the rays to a certain surface. The measurement will still work even without this laser beam. In most of the models, the laser can be switched off and the instrument still works. But you’ll not know where exactly you are pointing to. For this reason, an Infrared thermometer is also known as a laser thermometer.

However, the laser beam does not do any measurement. Be careful not to look into the laser beam at all under any circumstances. In case you are taking the measurement of a surface where people are standing, it is better to switch off the laser so that even if someone looks into the device they will not be affected. Be very careful when you point the device towards an area where people stand.

Advantages of Infrared Thermometer

The main advantages of an IR thermometer are:

  1. They can measure the temperature from a distance instantly. Each of the different models has an ideal measuring range and the temperature can be measured from this distance.
  2. This is the only means to measure hot surfaces like chemicals, molten metal etc. which cannot be approached by human beings.
  3. Dual beam Infrared thermometers give a better accuracy of measurement than a single beam thermometer.
  4. We can measure the temperature of moving objects also with these laser thermometers.

Accuracy of an IR Thermometer

The accuracy of an IR Thermometer is generally +/-1 Degree C to +/-2 Degree centigrade. This is applicable for any model of any manufacturer because this is based on the technology of infrared measurement. This is a non-contact thermometer and hence cannot have a high accuracy. If you want an accuracy of 0.1 Deg. C, an IR thermometer will not be suitable. For a high accuracy, you will need a contact thermometer.

Various terms used for an Infrared Temperature gun:

An Infrared Thermometer gun is known in various terminologies and few of them are given below:

  1. Infrared thermometer – This might be the most common name because it uses Infrared rays for measuring temperature.
  2. Infrared Temperature gun – This also is one of the most commonly used terminology because it is directed to a point to measure the temperature.
  3. IR Meter – IR is the short form of Infrared Rays and hence it is also known as IR Thermometer.
  4. IR Gun thermometer – The thermometer is held as a gun while measuring the temperature by aiming the laser rays at the measuring surface. Hence it is also known as IR Gun thermometer or simply gun thermometer.
  5. Temperature gun – This also is another terminology used since it is pointed as a gun to measure the temperature.

  7. Laser thermometer – This is also a common terminology since there is a laser to direct the infrared rays to the desired surface of measurement. The laser is not measuring the temperature but is useful in pointing the device. The laser can be switched off also if not required. The term Laser thermometer is a popular terminology being used. There are single and dual laser models available.
  8. Contact free thermometer – It is known as a contact-free thermometer or non-contact thermometer. This is because the measurement is made without touching the measuring surface especially for measuring chemicals, molten metal etc. For all other types of temperature measurements, the sensor has to touch the surface.
  9. Pyrometer – These instruments are also known as pyrometers, especially for higher range of measurements. A pyrometer can also store the measured value and also display minimum and maximum measured values of temperature.

IR Thermometer with thermocouple

This model has IR thermometer as all of the above models, but also has a facility to insert a thermocouple to measure the temperature of a surface. The thermocouple can be fixed onto the surface with the thermocouple. The thermocouple has to be inserted into the meter at the allocated slot and the other end of the thermocouple has to be touched at the surface of the measurement. This has no connection with the IR measurement and this is just an additional function combined in the same instrument.

How to Operate IR Laser Thermometer

The operation of all the above models of Infrared Thermometer is very simple. Simply switch on the device and direct the IR thermometer to the desired surface. Press the button and you will see a red laser pointed at the surface. Now the temperature of this surface will be displayed on the screen of the IR Thermometer. If you do not want the laser, you can switch off the beam using a press button for the same. If you want to record the temperature, certain models have the facility for the same. This can be done by pressing the button.

What to take care while measuring using a laser gun thermometer

While measuring using a laser thermometer please take care of the following:

  1. Please stand at the distance specified for the particular model of the instrument. If you measure at a farther distance, the error might be more.
  2. The infrared ray should not pass through different temperature levels. This means if you are measuring the temperature of a cold room, it is best to go inside the cold room and measure the temperature using the laser thermometer. Suppose you have a freezer below zero degree centigrade inside your warehouse of 25 Deg C. You may prefer to open the door of the freezer and measure few meters away from the door of the freezer. However, this will be far from the correct reading, since the Infrared ray is passing through 25 Deg C and then suddenly going to 0 Deg C. Then measurement will not be perfect. Instead, go into the freezer room and take the measurement.
  3. You should not measure the temperature through a glass. The laser will pass through the glass and will land at a surface beyond the glass. However, the infrared ray will be measuring the surface of the glass.
