A dehumidifier is a device to reduce the moisture level in the air. These are for homes, offices, warehouses, factories, cold storage etc. This article explains basic guidelines for the selection of the right dehumidifier. Humidity refers to the amount of water vapour in the air.
When the humidity levels in a home or room are too high, it may lead to a host of problems. these include squeaky floorboards and wet stains on surfaces. High levels of humidity also encourage the growth of allergens. Examples are mould, fungus, and dust mites. These can cause respiratory problems.
In general, a place that is too humid feels stuffy, hot. Usually, a musty smell also will be present. We have recently associated with the Dantherm group consisting of Master brand, Calorex brand and Dantherm brand of dehumidifiers.
This is where dehumidifiers are important. People call them moisture reduction machines, dehumidification machines, humidity reduction machines etc. There are a variety of models mainly under two technologies. These are condensation and desiccant types. A portable dehumidifier is the most common type and is also easy to find and relatively inexpensive. These humidifiers run on the basic concept of condensation.
Water vapour in the air turns into a liquid when it is in contact with a cool surface. This is the principle of condensation dehumidifier. A dehumidifier pulls the air in the room using a fan and takes it over cooled surface coils. The water vapour then condenses on the coils and then drips into the collecting container. Other types of dehumidifiers use desiccants. These are substances that naturally absorb water.
There are different types of dehumidifiers and each one is for a particular scenario or application. For home applications, consider the amount of space you want to dehumidify when choosing a dehumidifier. It is important to calculate the size of the dehumidification machine. If you don’t pay attention to this factor, your dehumidifier may be unable to remove enough moisture from the air. In the end, the unit will waste a lot of energy working too hard.
For optimum results, you need to buy the right size of the unit based on the space in terms of volume in cubic meters or cubic feet. If the space you want to dehumidify is big, you require a larger size so as to ensure efficiency. Humidity levels and indoor temperature have a huge effect on dehumidifier performance.
Do you want to dehumidify a place of low temperature- basement, garage or crawlspace? Then it’s important that you ensure the unit will continue to function effectively at low temperatures.
If the space that you want to dehumidify has extremely high levels of humidity, you will need to go for a high-capacity dehumidifier that can tackle large moisture loads.
Additionally, you need to consider units for specific areas like basement dehumidifiers, crawlspace dehumidifiers and dehumidifiers for indoor spas and pools.
How are you going to get rid of the collected water? All condensation dehumidifiers collect water sucked from the air. You have to remove this water continuously. A standard condensation dehumidifier comes with a container. You have to empty it on a regular basis. It will shut off automatically as soon as the container is full. Also for most of the models, you can connect a drain hose. This makes it easy and you don’t have to empty the container frequently.
A dehumidifier keeps the humidity levels of your room under check, making the air much more comfortable. With the proper selection of a dehumidifier, you can control the humidity. The following are the most important factors to consider when buying a dehumidifier:
This might sound a bit technical especially if you are buying a dehumidifier for your home. However, please note that generally, you do not need to use the calculation for a small home or office. We have guidelines given in our videos for this purpose. If you are buying for commercial applications, you can use our free dehumidifier capacity selection software.
There are two types of dehumidifiers by the technology used. The first one is a refrigerant or condensation type dehumidifier. The second one is the adsorbent or desiccant type dehumidifier. If your room temperature is above 10 Deg C for small applications, you can use a condensation dehumidifier. For temperatures below 10 deg C, generally, you may have to use desiccant type dehumidifiers.
There are different models by type of installation. These are portable, wall-mounted, duct mounted, roof-mounted etc. For all small applications, you may generally use portable condensation dehumidifiers. You may keep it on the floor. Please contact the nearest office of VackerGlobal for assistance in the selection of the right dehumidifier.
The majority of dehumidifier models have drainage functionality. Gravity drainage involves connecting a regular garden hose to a drain outlet on the back of the unit. This allows the machine to drain the collected condensate (moisture that has been sucked from the air) using gravity.
If you have a floor drain in your basement, you may run a regular garden hose from the side/back of the unit to the floor of the basement. This will ensure uninterrupted drainage only by using gravity. If your basement does not have drainage, you can fix a small water pump. We supply this as an optional item. This will pump the water to drainage at a higher level.
A dehumidifier should function at extremely low temperatures wherever applicable. If your climatic region is warm throughout the year, this may not be important for home applications. However, this is important for applications such as a walk-in cold room, chiller room etc.
This is mainly applicable for condensation types. Desiccant types work at temperatures below 10°C up to 0°C. If your application is below 0°C, you will have to specifically check with the manufacturer.
Spending a few hours on comparison shopping can save you a lot of money in the end. Thorough research should be conducted on different dehumidifier brands with different features, from design and size to the draining method and capacity.
All the different models are designed with the necessary features to help solve humidity problems. Ensure you familiarize yourself with the different types of models and features so as to make an informed purchase. Other than price and design, you have to check some major parameters. These are mainly capacity, drainage feature, defrost etc. as explained previously.
Smaller units are typically used around the home or small industrial areas. So it is important to ensure that your unit is movable from one room to another or from upstairs to downstairs and vice versa. The industrial models will be definitely heavier. Medium-sized machines will have wheels for moving on the floor. They may also have handles to pull them around.
A dehumidifier with automated controls for setting relative humidity levels is the most ideal. The technical term for this control is hygrostat or humidistat. You can set the desired humidity in the hygrostat. This is similar to the thermostat for Air conditioning units.
Your home’s optimal relative humidity should be between 50% to 70% under normal conditions. A dehumidifier with built-in hygrostat can control relative humidity, automatically displaying the current readings. Adjustable humidistat enables the user to set a desired level of humidity and the machine automatically maintains it.
There are many industrial machines in which a hygrostat will be an optional item. Please look at this aspect during purchase. The hygrostat automatically switches the dehumidifier on or off based on the settings.
Humidity levels are high in Dubai, Abudhabi and other emirates of UAE. During summer, the outdoor humidity reaches up to 90%. The humidity is at its worst during the months from May to October. Hence, Vacker has been supplying quality dehumidifiers. These are supplied by us in Dubai and other Emirates.
This involves a lot of designs, engineering and site work. Hence, Dehumidifier Dubai division was separated in 2015. This helps us to provide better customer service in Dubai and other Emirates. This division takes care of all types of commercial, industrial and residential applications. These projects involve all types of small and big dehumidifiers.
When the outdoor humidity goes high, it affects the humidity of indoor areas proportionately. Levels above 65 to 70% cause adverse effects on human beings. This especially affects people with respiratory problems.
After forming the Dehumidifier Dubai division, we have trained a separate design and installation team. Now we have more than 60 models of dehumidifiers and humidifiers. Hence, we have trained our personnel at the manufacturer’s factory in Germany.
